Sugarcane smut was found in the Murray district of the Tully Mill Area in October 2008. Since then it has been found on other farms in the Murray, Euramo and El Arish districts. It has been found in Q166A, Q174A and Q229A.
Replacing smut susceptible varieties with resistant varieties is the only way to manage smut. Growers should continue to replace smut susceptible varieties with resistant varieties in accordance with their current crop cycle.

In the last few weeks, leaf scald has been found in Q229A crops in the Mulgrave Mill area. Investigations suggest it is widespread in this variety.
The disease can cause stalk death and yield losses in highly susceptible varieties. The level of disease observed in some crops of Q229A places this variety at risk.
In addition to leaf scald, recent resistance testing has also shown Q229A to be more susceptible to smut than previously thought. Susceptibility to both major diseases has caused BSES Limited to recommend that growers no longer plant Q229A.
